Abstract

We present the interview with a professor at the University of Wittenberg, USA, David Nibert, led by Professor Lauren Corman's Animal Voices group in Ontario, entitled "Cows, colonialism and capitalism." The interviewee , PhD in sociology, is well known among activists for animals because of their work on the interrelated oppressions of human and non-human, as well as his preaching socialism. This time, Nibert offers a brief autobiographical tour on how the connection made between the two forms of oppression, the way he has been teaching "Animals and Society" in their courses and emphasizes the economic gain that is the basis of the exploitation. Also makes a call to rights activists animal to pay attention to the capitalist system, fundamental key to understanding the causes of human suffering inflicted and nonhuman. In fact, part of the interview is aimed at show how the economic system has improved the operation and the need to emphasize this fundamental dimension for a world more fair. In addition, it also presents part of his research, "Cows, profits and genocide. The oppressive side of consumption 'beef ' ", which realizes how the history of colonization Latin America was made possible by the exploitation of cows. Finally, exploitation of indigenous peoples and cows is shown in parallel with the current situation in Brazil and Darfur two interrelated regions where exploitation is still visible explicitly.

    Profesora Asociada de Sociología en Brock University. Enseña Estudios Críticos Animales y Teoría Social Contemporánea. Su trabajo es primordialmente sobre teoría y política interseccional; y agencia, socialidad y resistencia de animales no humanos

  • David Nibert

    Profesor de Sociología en Wittenberg University, donde enseña cursos sobre Animales y Sociedad. Activista comunitario, es el autor de Animal Rights/Human Rights: Entanglements of Oppression and Liberation (Rowman/Littlefield), and Animal Oppression and Human Violence: Domesecration, Capitalism and Global Conflict (Columbia University Press). Ha co-organizado la sección de Animales y Sociedad de la American Sociological Association.
