Abstract

Currently, from certain feminist theories, it is argued that the relationship existing among the various types of oppression (sexism, racism, speciesism, destruction of the environment, etc.) means that the defense of one of these causes does not make sense without a simultaneous struggle for all others. This article will present briefly the most important positions on the link that has been established from one of these theories – vegetarian ecofeminism -- between meat consumption and the dominance of men over women. From vegetarian ecofeminism it is understood that having a meat-free diet and even free from any product of animal origin is a moral obligation for all persons who consider themselves feminist. This premise is not, however, shared by all feminist theorists, consequently it has been under heavy criticism. But even among those feminists who do see a clear relationship between sexism and omnivorous diet, there is not complete agreement about how far it is not legitimate under certain circumstances to include meat in our diet.
