An analysis of conservation biology from biopower to eco-nationalism in Aotearoa New Zealand
Keywords:
Conservation, Biopower, Native, InvasiveAbstract
This paper consists of an analysis of conservation biology based on the idea that there are lives that are sacrificed and lives that are recognized as valuable. The approach from the theoretical framework of Michel Foucault’s biopower allows us to observe that this science does not protect life, but acts under logics that hierarchize it, granting care to certain populations or species while promoting the death of others through the device of racism. Examining conservationist discourses and practices through this lens reveals how policies of extermination are constructed and linked to specific structures, subjectivities and values such as the native and the invader. The analysis of Aotearoa New Zealand is an interesting case as it intersects conservation, colonialism and eco-nationalism. Finally, the possibility of rethinking the relationships between existing beings by considering them as the product of complex interactions through time is suggested.
