En lugar de ir al zoológico…

The advertising of any contemporary zoo could suggest its potential customers that their visit means a deeply educational experience and a serious impulse for the conservation of endangered species. In this paper, after reviewing the available data on the scientific, conservationist and educational impact of present zoos, I will offer some reasons why, in their present state, zoos do not nor cannot fulfil their alleged role. Finally, I will propose an alternative to redirect our cognitive biophilia different from the encounters with exotic animals in captivity in zoos. The human encounter with local species in bio regional environments can better redirect our attention to ecological relationships, and that redirection is more educational if it happens when we are able to discover these ecological relationships not far from where we are. The situated experiences with local animals can teach us about the composition of ecosystems which their populations of species belong to, and motivate us to take care of the local habitats on which our behaviuor will leave a more conspicuous ecological footprint, and on whose conservation depends the survival of the animals which we have been able to meet.
