Abstract

The photographic project “Manifesto Animal” tries to discuss about speciesism without portraying the reality in which the animals are exposed to in the food industry. As in the literature fables, the photographs tell fanciful stories. They create new worlds, ruled by their own laws, that aim to provoke our perception of reality. Despite being plainly imagined, these stories are committed to political matters. In a multicultural world, the contemporary photography admits multiple truths and reinvents itself poetically, allowing the facts to be forged from elements that are intrinsic to the photographical language.

This essay tries different views to animal exploitation through the use of photography as expressive language, and reveals its truth based in a personal and subjective perception. As in the children’s tales, the fantasy connects common points to the reality through the symbolic representation. Despite the differences between characters, scenarios and dilemmas, the fables have one common point: the moral of the story. Likewise, in this project the images contain stories in themselves and the guideline of the narratives is the discussion about the speciesism - this debate questions our morality and purposes an ethical debate towards the animal exploitation, considering moral as a set of values of conduct that guides our social behaviour and ethics as connected to the character, not to the social convention.

First presented as an course conclusion work of the major in communication with qualification in journalism of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA - Brazil) the project is still under development process, it aims to go deeper into researches related to veganism and photography, so it can add to the fight for animal liberation with the hope that the non-human animals are also able to live happily ever after.
