Abstract

"The doorman" –a novel by Reinaldo Arenas– narrates the revolt of a clandestinely-gathered group of animals that evoke their traumatic experiences with humans. Their escape at the end of the novel represents the possibility of an ecological utopia. Gambaro's tale –"Dog (2)"– uses a narrator with different internal approaches to recreate the lack of communication between animal (a dog) and human (his owner) discourse. The story concludes with silence between the species. Going beyond this requires rethinking different ways of communicating. Based on the analysis of these two texts, this article aims to develop two essential ideas proposed by the criticism of "animal studies": the possibility of the animal voice and its renewal in the field of culture.
