Uma proposta de mediação

Resumo

Este artigo explora as possibilidades da comunicação intercultural como mediadora ética em situações em que a defesa dos direitos dos animais não-humanos entra em conflito com o reconhecimento de exceções legais para as tradições de minorias étnicas ou culturais que envolvem o uso de animais. Argumento acerca das razões pelas quais essas práticas culturais, assumindo a senciência como critério de consideração moral, devem ser entendidas como prejudiciais para os animais e que devemos nos opor a elas da mesma forma como nos opomos às práticas nocivas quando são perpetradas contra os seres humanos. Justifico os motivos pelos quais uma posição que estabeleça os direitos dos animais como sendo universais é compatível com a rejeição do colonialismo ou do imperialismo cultural. Finalmente, proponho duas estratégias de mediação ética baseadas em duas propriedades da comunicação intercultural, como proposto por Bennett (1998): a ênfase na diferença e o etnorrelativismo ético.
