Aldo Leopold (Iowa 1887–Wisconsin 1948) was an important figure in the fauna management and the conservation of the wilderness in U.S.A. at the time when a sudden increase in population and industry led to reflect on the effects of the human activity. A Sand County Almanac, produced during the last years of his life and published after his death, collects essays and tales about his residence in the countryside, and sensitively and lucidly expresses his worry about nature and progress. From a non-anthropocentric view, the author lays out a new relationship between humans and the environment and spreads the notion of ethics that includes all biotic community. Both “Thinking like a Mountain”, one of his most celebrated writings, and “On the Monument to Pigeon” show Leopold’s thought, proving him a precursor of deep ecology.
