Abstract

The proposal of this paper is (1) to try to establish a definition of speciesism; and (2) to locate speciesism as one of the isms of domination that sustain structural social inequalities. To do this, initially I will present and follow the paths of the definition of speciesism proposed by Oscar Horta in the article entitled “What is speciesism?”. Then, I will present the concept of oppression defended by Iris Marion Young in the paper “Five faces of oppression”. Based on both authors, I intend to defend, accompanied by Lori Gruen, that non-human animals form what we can call an oppressed social group. Later, I will present the contribution of the author Billy Ray Belcourt regarding the intimate and necessary association between speciesism and colonialism. And to conclude, I will point out the need to recognize the structural aspect of speciesism, offering elements that can be translated into what I call “structural speciesism”.
