DO FISH RESIST?

Abstract

In this article Dinesh Wadiwel proposes a methodological shift from which to think about our relationship with fish and other marine animals. Instead of starting from the question about suffering, a question mediated by an epistemic violence that makes fish beings without agency and sensitivity, Wadiwel highlights the question of resistance. Starting from an operaist and Foucauldian position, the author elaborates a conception of resistance that does not necessarily have to imply a conscious act, but rather functions as the strategic counterpart of the devices developed to combat it. Through this lens, Wadiwel studies technologies such as the fishing hook, the net, and contemporary aquaculture practices, as ways of responding to the resistance that fish put up to capture.
