Abstract

This study for the video art “Beyond Words in a More-than-human world” tensions the history of science and its records in different temporalities. The images were edited from excerpts from institutional films produced throughout the 20th century by Brazilian se- rotherapy institutions, such as the Butantan Institute and the Vital Brazil Institute. By re- visiting the past of serum therapy, images that precede the ethical “filters” that naturalize animal plundering bring us closer to the condition of lives under intense manipulation. It is necessary to listen to the acid sound of electric guitars to break the deafening silence about practices of bio-power in equine bodies, justified by war, science, sport, leisure, or by everything that concerns the frozen pseudo-centaur, eyes inward, unable to question her privileges. “Beyond words” revisits movements, reactions, equipment, men of science, their assistants and the equine condition in different degrees of dispossession.
