Food Ethics
Moral considerations about meat consumption
Keywords:
moral, large-scale actions, consumption, exploitation, virtues, responsibilityAbstract
The article reflects on meat consumption and dairy products in the current industrialized societies of the 21st century, and evaluates the individual meat consumption habits that support the cruel factory farm industry. In the global food system, all elements are valued just in terms of their economic usefulness and animals are treated as commodities. My aim is to analyze the moral issues of individual actions that contribute to animal exploitation. In order to conduct my analysis, I will follow these steps: 1) Introduction; 2) Definition of carnism; 3) Analysis of large-scale actions; 4) Evaluation of the link between large-scale actions and animal suffering; 5) Considerations about the moral issues of large-scale actions; 6) Analysis of the difference between welfarism and abolitionism; 7) Reflections on the link between meat consumption, large-scale actions, and virtues.
