Abstract

The purpose of this article is to review Michel Foucault’s concept of pastoral power to think about the relationship between domination over animals and the processes of government among humans. In order to do this, we will review the concept of pastoral power in the Foucauldian work. After that, we will explore the relationship between pastoral technology and some forms of domination over animals. Finally, we will review some theoretical strategies, among scholars of Critical Animal Studies, to link the history of government over men with the history of domination over animals, thus developing a concept of pastoral power that involves both human and animal life.
