Think about universal rights:
about "tension” between human rights and animal rights
Keywords:
universal rights, human rights, animal’s rightsAbstract
The aim of this short article is to explore the tension between animal’s rights and human rights, considering the last ones have at its foundations the supremacy of human beings in nature and over non-human animals. This works explores the roots of this tension, which can be traced in the advocacy of “human dignity” as the key basis for human rights. In contrast, other categories able to be used in the definition of universal rights without human supremacy and overcome this tension are proposed. Special relevance is given to the principles and categories already used by representatives of disadvantaged groups, mainly women. Last, it presents the benefitsthat both groups (human rights advocates and animal’s rights advocates) could obtain in case of alliance.
