Abstract

The works of Jorge Luis Borges are marked by the footprints of nonhuman animals, amongst which tigers stand out. This paper constitutes a reading of Borges’ tigers –and the Borges of tigers—from an ecocritical perspective, focusing on the relationship that the author and his poetic and narrative voices establish with other animal subjects. Following the premise that several texts by Borges deconstruct and decolonize the human-animal dichotomy, this article seeks to understand the roles of the human-tiger relationship in the author’s works, the historic, scientific, and epistemological discourses that promote and limit said relationship, and the connections between the tiger and fundamental themes such as divinity, infinity, and language. Thus, the main objective of this analysis is to examine the interspecies relationships and human and nonhuman subjectivities in the literature of Jorge Luis Borges.
