Contra la ética de la ecología del miedo
Por un cambio en los fines de la intervención en la naturaleza

Los seres humanos intervienen a menudo en la naturaleza por motivaciones antropocéntricas o ambientalistas. Un ejemplo de tales intervenciones consiste en la reintroducción de lobos en áreas en las que vivían antaño con el fin de crear la que ha sido conocida como una “ecología del miedo”. En la primera parte de este artículo se discuten las razones que han sido esgrimidas a favor de esta medida, y se explica que estas son incompatibles con un enfoque no especista. Se exponen para ello los motivos por las cuales tal medida daña notablemente a animales como los ciervos, sin ser tampoco es beneficiosa para los propios lobos. A continuación, se argumenta que si abandonamos una perspectiva especista debemos cambiar por completo el modo en el que intervenimos en la naturaleza. En lugar de intervenir por motivaciones ecologistas o antropocéntricas, nuestro fin al hacerlo debe ser el de reducir los daños sufridos por los animales no humanos. La visión idílica según la cual los animales no humanos viven vidas paradisíacas en la naturaleza es totalmente incorrecta, y de hecho hay razones de peso para considerar que el sufrimiento y la muerte prematura prevalecen de forma clara sobre la felicidad de estos animales. Ello hace aún más importante que nuestro fin sea mejorar su situación y darles nuestra ayuda, en lugar de causarles daños. Esto entra en conflicto de forma significativa con algunos ideales ecologistas fundamentales cuya defensa no es compatible con la consideración de los intereses de los animales no humanos.
