Abstract

This review is about the new book by Paula Casal and Peter Singer, "The Rights of the Apes," published in 2022 by Trotta Publishers. The book is divided into five sections that address ethics, science, and law, and provide an ecumenical defense of apes in order to grant them three basic rights: life, liberty, and freedom from torture. In addition, the book responds to criticisms raised against the Great Ape Project and proposes strategies for achieving this goal at a time when structural and effective measures are urgently needed. Finally, an assessment is made of the current situation of apes, and presents a basic exposition about their lives and threats.
